James M. Murphy 'Man of God, wise and kind, a gentle man, and a gentleman,'James M. Murphy, our beloved father, passed away peacefully in his 106th year on May 23, 2016. Jim Murphy was born on Aug. 29, 1910, in Cambridge Mass., the son of Michael Murphy and Catherine McDermott. He attended Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn and the University of Wyoming. Jim married Helen Joan Glasco in 1942 and lived for many years in Amityville, N.Y., and Little Compton, R.I. He was predeceased by his wife and three of his children, James Murphy Jr., Kevin Murphy, and Curtis Murphy, and is survived by his children, Kathleen Mencher, Paul Murphy, Donald Murphy, Gregory Murphy, Maryellen Peck, Sheila Murphy, Elizabeth Murphy, and Margaret DeAngelis; 17 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. An avid sportsman, he golfed and participated in marathons and road races into his 90s. He was a hospice volunteer well into old age and marched in Washington on the eve of his 100th birthday. Jim was a man of God, wise and kind, a gentle man, and a gentleman, devoted to his wife and the well-being of his family. A quiet man; a man of great integrity, humor, grace, and fortitude. Rest in peace, Dad. Well done. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 217 Prospect St., South Orange, N.J., on Thursday, May 26, at 10:30 a.m.
