I am so very sorry to hear of John's passing. I served with John on the FDR. He was a shipmate and good friend. We really hit it off together. I am displeased at myself for not trying to contact John sooner. Onboard ship we had plenty of time to talk and John talked often about his work at the Defense Intelligence Agency. I was fascinated by his stories, especially the briefings he presented to the SecDef (Robert McNamara) and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Not many people in life get to do what John did. He was truly a special person. John took some videos of me on the ship that I have to this day. Caroline and I recall attending a fun party at the Ambrogi's that featured shrimp on the hibachi.

John was my division officer when I came aboard the Thomaston (LSD28). As a very green ensign I was kept off balance by an older 2nd class petty officer bosun mate. The bosun had a girl friend that made daily liberty a necessity. John helped me around this corner by telling the bosun he would use his liberty card for kindling unless the harassment stopped. It stopped, and I got a lesson in how it was done. John was a compassionate and great leader. Larry Blackwell
