Charles Allen Brownley Jr. departed this life on Friday, December 30, 2005. He was born September 13, 1923 in Baltimore, Maryland. He graduated from Douglas High School in 1941 and went on to study liberal arts at Morgan State College before being drafted into the U.S. Army. After serving in the U.S. armed forces during World War II, Charles received a baccalaureate degree in Pharmacy from St. John’s University in Brooklyn, New York, in 1951. He continued his studies at Columbia and Rutgers Universities, earning a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J. in [1968]. Charles lived in the Vauxhall section of Union Township, N.J. for more than 40 years. In 1994 he moved to Leesburg, FL where he married Christiane Delgleize in May 2003. Previously, Charles was married to Valerie W. Brownley (deceased) with whom he had a son Charles A. Brownley, III of Montclair, N.J. and a daughter, Jane C. Brownley of Oak Park, IL. Along with his family, he was a member of Morrow Memorial United Methodist Church in Maplewood, N.J. for many years. Charles had extensive experience in retail pharmacy and held an administrative position with the Veterans Administration and a position as an analytical chemist with the U.S. government before he joined CIBA Pharmaceutical Products, Inc. in 1953 as a Research Pharmacist. Before retiring from CIBA-Geigy Corporation after 37 years, he was promoted to Director [of/in Pharmacy Research]. During his professional career, his research was published in a number of articles in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Science, the Wiley-Liss Drug Development Research publication, and other professional technical publications. Charles was an active participant in local community affairs. Noteworthy were his pioneering leadership as the first local Boy Scout Troop Master, Vauxhall, NJ and his unsuccessful bid for election to the Union Township Board of Education in1968. His professional memberships included the American Pharmaceutical Association and Rho Chi. He was a member of the National Pharmaceutical Association and served as the North Jersey Chapter Secretary for many years. Socially, he was an active member the Upsilon Phi Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. In retirement he continued to pursue his domestic and international coin and stamp collections with passion. Charles was the son of the late Charles A. Brownley Sr. and Annie Douglas Smith Brownley. Also preceding him in death were three sisters Helen Meredith, June Agnew, and Ruth Brownley, and one brother Alfred L. Brownley, Sr. He leaves behind a stepbrother, Ronald Brownley; his son and daughter; two grandchildren Charles A. Brownley, IV and Carlotta E. Brownley; a daughter in-law Hazeline Pilgrim, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Charles had a rare combination of keen intelligence and warm compassion. He valued higher education and pursued his interests with tenacity, perseverance, and good old-fashioned hard work. He provided well for his family, of which, his was very proud.
