John M. Cuff, 86, of Basking Ridge, formerly of Vailsburg, died on Saturday, April 21, 2007, at home. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Church, Vailsburg, 481 Sanford Ave., Newark, on Thursday, April 26, at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover. A visitation will be held at the Jacob A. Holle Funeral Home, 2122 Millburn Ave., Maplewood, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Born in Dunmore, Pa., Mr. Cuff lived in Vailsburg before moving to Basking Ridge seven years ago. He was an investigator for the Essex County Welfare Board from 1974 to 2000, when he retired. He was also a detective in the Newark Police Department from 1947 to 1974. Mr. Cuff was a member of the Newark Police VFW Post, the Retired Police and Fire Association of Essex County, the John F. Cryan Association, the Emerald Society of Essex County, and the Knights of Columbus of South Orange; a former member of the Newark F.O.P., and a charter member of the Friendly Sons of Shillelagh. He served in the U.S. Armys Cavalry Division in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was the beloved husband of Grace ONeil Cuff; devoted father of John and Paul Cuff; loving brother of Mary Wall, the late Emmett, and Michael Cuff; dear grandfather of Michael, Megan and Kaitlyn Cuff. In lieu of flowers, donations to the St. Barnabas Hospice, 187 Millburn Ave., Millburn, N.J. 07041, would be appreciated.
