William J. Moates Sr., 87, of Mountainside died June 9, 2007, at Brighton Gardens, Mountainside.Beloved husband of the late Margaret Long Moates. Devoted father of Angela Eberle, Edythe Sakowski, William J. Moates Jr. and Nancy Englitarra. Also survived by 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 217 Prospect St., South Orange, on Wednesday, June 13, at 9:30 a.m. Visitation will be held at The Jacob A. Holle Funeral Home, 2122 Millburn Ave., Maplewood, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. For more information or to send condolences, please visit jacobhollefuneralhome.com. Born in Pascaquola, Miss., Mr. Moates was a resident of Mountainside. Previously, he had lived in Union for two years and Maplewood, where he lived for many years. Before retiring, he worked for the sewer department for the Township of Maplewood, where he worked from 1962 to 1982. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, he served from 1942 to 1946, reaching the rank of corporal. Wounded in action in May 1945, he was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a 1947 graduate of Mississippi State University with a B.S. degree. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, South Orange. He was a member of the VFW, Maplewood, and Knights of Columbus, South Orange. In lieu of flowers, donations to Care Alternatives Hospice, 70 Jackson Drive, Suite 200, Cranford, N.J. 07016, would be appreciated.
