Joseph Noble was a true renaissance man. His interests were legion, his curiosity unending and his contributions myriad. Though Joe was an important participant on the world stage, he was just as concerned about and involved in his own community. We will miss him greatly at the Durand-Hedden House, the small historic house museum in Maplewood, his beloved place of residence for most of his adult life. A founding trustee and mentor of Durand-Hedden, Joe was responsible for acquiring key defining collections and insuring that proper professional procedures were followed. He also presented popular programs for us, including
gamely portraying famed artist Asher B.Durand. We valued Joesph Veach Noble as a top museum professional. But, above all, we appreciated him for his generosity of spirit and his many acts of friendship as our Maplewood neighbor.

We are so proud to call him our friend. We shared many moments with Joe at fund raisers, gallery openings and civic events.
Joe's talent and ability to share his accumulated riches which he aquired over a life time will long be remembered by Maplewoodians.
Most recently, we served on the Mural Restoration Project. The Murals in Maplewood Town Hall will always belong to Joe. From concept, more that 50 years ago, to the current restoration, they will be Joe's.
We will miss his smile. It really lit up a room.

Dear Lois,
I just learned that dear Joe passed away last Saturday and want to send you my sincere condolences at once. It must be so difficult to start recovering from such a major loss, but I trust your family and friends will gather around you to give you the strength and peace of mind that Joe himself would have wished for you. And I that trust my expression of true compassion and understanding will help a little in looking forward. Joe was always so kind to me at the Metropolitan Museum, as a friend and as a member of my department's Visiting Committee, as well as at our Trustees Meetings of the Corning Museum of Glass. His wisdom and kind advice were always appreciated. He will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. You are in my thoughts at this very difficult moment. Please extend my sympathy to the immediate family.
With my sincerest condolences,
Yours ever,
Carlos A. Picon

Dear Lois:
Jane and I send you and your family our deepest condolances on the passing of Joe. He was one in a million, no question about it. He was an important mentor to me after he and my immediate boss hired me to join the curatorial departments of the Museum of the City of New York. I worked with Joe for almost fifteen years and it was always a pleasure. Hardly a day goes by that I do not recall some words of wisdom, advice, or professional action of his that has served me well on the job. In addition to his leadership in our field, and his great stories, I always enjoyed his subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) sense of humor. He was a very down-to-earth person in a field that often has few such individuals. It was a joy to go to work at Fifth Avenue and 103rd Street with Joe at the helm.
