Obituary of June D. Mayer

Please share a memory of June to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
June D. Mayer, 78, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on July 13, from complications from a recent stroke. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 16, at 10 a.m. at The Jacob A. Holle Funeral Home, 2122 Millburn Ave., Maplewood. A lifelong resident of New Jersey, June was born in Passaic and lived in Clifton and Chatham Township, among other New Jersey towns. She attended Passaic High, where she excelled in math and languages, becoming fluent in Spanish, and acquiring a lifelong interest in international studies, politics and commerce. After Passaic High, June attended the Latin American Institute, from there starting her career in a Spanish import/export firm. Her Spanish fluency and diplomatic skills helped her land a job at the UN, where she worked on various assignments for the Consul General. She then become one of John D. Rockefellers personal managers, with a focus on the Far East. That position led to her appointment to the staff of the Far EastAmerica Council in the early 1960s, where she rose to the position of executive director. In one particularly prophetic essay, she wrote, With the dawning of a new decade, the need for international cooperation grows more acute... However, even amidst the uncertainties of this period, Asia confirmed its status as a region of increased commercial significance... Amazingly, given the events of today, this essay was written in 1980. It was during her tenure at the Council that June met her beloved husband, Robert G. Mayer, who predeceased her. Together, they loved to travel around the United States and the world. June also had a great love of film, good food and the theater. Surviving are her beloved cousin, Carol Ann Dempsey; childhood friend and lifelong confidant, Bernice Zachary; step-son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Mary Mayer; grandchildren, Ian and Erin Mayer, Bret N. Mayer and Lyndsey A. Mayer; her stepdaughter and son-in-law, Ridgeley and Michael Weinberg, and cousins, Joan Cameron and Maureen Cameron Wales. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Huberts Animal Welfare Center, 575 Woodland Ave., P.O. Box 159, Madison, N.J. 07940 would be appreciated.
