Obituary of Lucille Hughes

Lucille Hoffmann Hughes, 91, beloved mother of John Edward, Jr., (Jed), his wife, Terri, and Michael, his wife, Susan, Dear grandmother of Patrick and John Michael, in Ligonier, Pa. She was also the grandmother to Nikole Farrell and Brant Pickup. A native of Brooklyn and a first generation American on her mother Emma's side, Mrs. Hughes was the first in her family to attend college. She earned her degree from Mt. Holyoke in 1939. She met her late husband, John, when she was executive assistant to the Director of the Payne-Whitney Institute at New York Hospital, and he was studying to be a psychoanalyst. They married in New York's St. Patrick's Cathedral in 1944. While her sons were in school, Mrs. Hughes was President of Lincoln School PTA in Newark, and later the Newark Academy Mothers' Association. Once her sons went to college, Mrs. Hughes returned to school and earned a Master's Degree in Special Education from Seton Hall University. She worked for more than 20 years in the South Orange-Maplewood School District, most of the time at South Orange Middle School. She was an enthusiastic world traveler and enjoyed meeting and talking to people, playing word games of all kinds, and cooking for her family and friends. She loved music, theater and sports, especially when her sons and grandsons were involved. She was a proficient pianist and singer. She also loved the Jersey shore, where she and her husband owned a home for many years in Sea Girt. Two years ago she moved to Pa. from Wall Township to be closer to her family.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Church 217 Prospect St., South Orange on Thur, Dec 2nd at 10:30 AM. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover. Visitation will be held at The Jacob A. Holle Funeral Home 2122 Millburn Ave, Maplewood on Thur 8:30 – 10:00 AM ONLY.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, N.Y, N.Y., or to the Parkinson's Research Foundation, Sarasota, FL.
