Bob coached me from a young man to a life as an adult with pride in myself and a concern for those around me. He was my coach, mentor and a friend. He finished his final race and is now in the winners circle. God Bless.

I only found out this morning that Bob had passed last week. I am very sad that I was not able to say "goodbye" to him. We worked together in the Guidance Office of Union High School for many years. He was one of the best men I knew--counselor, coach, friend, husband and father. I will miss you, Bob.

I always knew Bob as Coach or Mr O'Dell. I decided to run Cross Country in 1959, my senior year and Bob's 2d year as the Coach. He was very helpful to me in my first year of cross country and he was an inspiration when guiding us about school and general problems of life. Maybe that's why he later became a guidance counselor. I am grateful he let me make a copy of his detailed records of our race times and where we each placed in each meet -- before computers. One of his innovations was to run a shorter race during a football game halftime so more fans could see a cross country race. We beat Seton Hall Prep 19-36! He wrote a note in his December Christmas card that this would probably be his last card. Perhaps he felt something. Coach O'Dell will be missed.
