It is said God brings into your life the people that you need. Apparently, I needed the best friend a person could ever have. I am very proud and honored to say that Stephanie was my best friend for almost 30 years. She invited me to join her lunch table at our high school cafeteria, and from that point on her hand was always extended in sincere and generous friendship. I am so happy to say that when I think of the funniest moments of my life, Stephanie was right there, laughing along with me. I was lucky to have been able to share my life with hers, and I will miss her deeply.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I was Stephanie's counterpart at HarperCollins for many years and, as such, often worked with her on author visits. In my present position, too, I worked with her on author events, and she was so lovely to work with, so smart and funny, and dependable even during her long illness. Truly a rare person. I'm going to miss her and, feeling her loss, I can only imagine yours. My heart goes out to you.

Stephanie was nothing less than supportive, warm, funny, sympathetic, and incredibly hard-working. Even as her physical health declined, she forged ahead without self-pity, her sly sense of humor intact. When last I spoke to her -- a complex and long conversation just a few months ago about upcoming school visits -- her voice had weakened but her mind and heart were firing full-thrust. An inspiration indeed.
Stephanie has been a colleague and friend since she began at Scholastic. Her positive personality, warmth, and humor will remain with all who were lucky enough to know her -- a dear person who will be dearly missed. My condolences to her family and the legions of people who worked with, loved, and were influenced by our extraordinary Stephanie.

I was one of Stephanie's authors. Not too many monhs ago, I came to New York and we went to lunch at a restaurant a few blocks from Scholastic. Her wig was a little tilted, one of her eyes was covered with a patch, she looked a bit swollen from some of the meds she'd been taking. Yet, she mentioned time and again, how lucky she felt.
She said, "I'm so lucky to have such a wonderful husband and supportive family."
She said, "I'm so lucky that that one of the most qualified doctors in this type of cancer is right here in New York."
She said, "I'm so lucky to work at Scholastic. They've done so many wonderful things for me."
I want to say that I feel lucky to have known Stephanie. She was an example of how to live. I can hear her right now, confirming something I said on the phone, and saying, "Exactly, exactly!" Always positive. Always affirming. Thank you, Stephanie. I already miss you.
Love, Pam

When Stephanie arranged school appearances for me, she always did it with calm efficiency. What I most remember, though, is the patience and good humor she showed when, more than once, I marveled at her "swimmer" email address. How many times she must have heard comments on this, but each time, she responded with good humor, as if it were the first. She must've been relieved when she married and changed her name.

I miss Stephanie so much already.
She had a deeply kind, generous, upbeat approach to everything, even through those years when she was so sick. And she also had an inner glow -- a powerful sort of shine, a well of positive energy that seemed to carry her along with grace. She was a giver in the true sense of the word.
Once when she was in the hospital I sent her a book of Mary Oliver's poems, and she responded by telling me, in writing, which ones she especially liked and why. This was Stephanie all over; she always went the extra mile, and she shared. She was quick to share her laughter, her heart, her energy, and her can-do spirit.
I know that all of us who cared about her will never forget this dear person.
With love to you, Stephanie, and to your family,

I am traveling In California for a book talk and have just learned of Stephanie's passing.. Over the years as I learned that she had cancer, Stephanie never talked about it when we spoke on the phone. It was only when I asked her how she was feeling. And then she would respond with courage and optimism. Such a kind person - with a positive energy. Always there for her authors, rather than for herself. She gave that to all of us. She has been a part of my school life for many years. . . from Wimmer to Nooney. I always felt Stephanie's presence when I walked through the front doors of those countless schools early in the morning. We were in those schools together. When kids carried books home in their backpacks, Stephanie was part of their enthusiasm and excitement. When Lisa M. filled in for Stephanie, I usually sensed that a new challenge was being faced in Stephanie's illness. I felt helpless from afar. I have no words today.
What a great loss for the children's book world.

There are few people at Scholastic I've known longer, and certainly none with whom I had worked with for so long without actually having met in person. That changed a few years ago when she called to ask if I would do a visit at an elementary school in New Jersey, where had gone as a child. I immediately said yes. But I did request that she attend the visit, not just so I could meet her in person, but so she could experience first hand, the results of all her efforts of arranging visits for me all those years. It was really fun to be with her in the school she once attended. I knew she had been ill for some time, and always admired her courage to stay at her job for so long. I am deeply saddened by her passing. She will be missed.

There would never be words enough to express the grief I know we all feel at losing Stephanie; I only heard today of her passing and still can't quite believe it. Like so many of the authors whose lives she touched through her kindness, her humor and her thoughtfulness, I never had the privilege of actually meeting Stephanie face-to-face, but always thought of her as a dear and trusted friend.
Stephanie was someone I regarded as my "guardian angel" at Scholastic, always looking after my best interests and never too busy to answer a question or soothe a concern. And when we both realized, last year, how many years had passed since our first meeting via phone, we promised each other through e-mails that we'd try to actually meet, if only for lunch, "one day soon."
Now, knowing that day will never come, I'm filled with sorrow, frustration and regret, of course, but after reading so many other messages filled with similar sentiments from other friends and authors, I'm also grateful for having known Stephanie in any capacity. She never complained, never sounded anything but optimistic about the future, and I know we all drew strength from her courage. That was her great gift to everyone who knew her--her positive attitude, her generous, happy spirit, and her ever-constant kindness. How rare such kindness truly is.
Stephanie, please forgive me for not being there with you and your family today; I would have been if only I had known in time. My heart goes out to everyone who is grieving today, especially your best beloved, your family, your countless friends, your colleagues at Scholastic and every single author whose life was made better simply by knowing you were "there" for us all. God bless your sweet soul, Stephanie. We love you so much, and will miss you forever.

Stephanie was a true book person. Not only did she manage Scholastic authors and their presence in schools and at conferences, but also she reveled in the work authors and publishers do. She liked to talk about one's most recent book and she appreciated the fine points of good book making.
Stephanie came with me to a school visit in New Jersey. She was like a rock star to the teachers and librarian because she knew just everybody. She would say " So-and-so has a new book coming out ..." or " So-and-so will be in New Jersey next April...." Her audience loved listening to her and getting advance notice.
Hers was a selfless job. As she was handling us all, she was struggling with cancer. She remained upbeat and rarely talked about herself. What a huge heart. She will missed by so many.

Steph,
As usual I am late in doing something, however as it always seems our lives certainly get in the way of how we want to live. So you are gone now. It could make me feel awful for the times I saw you phone number and thought, wow I need to call her again or I need to send another e-mail. Those will not be my thoughts for when I saw you in Milwaukee it was if time had not passed at all. Of course you had a different look than the last time I saw you, but that really didn't matter. We laughed at Rick's idiosyncracies just as hard as we always have, and of the trials and tribulations of ourselves as well as the list of ususal suspects for ridicule...you know who they are...35 years gives us lots of ammunition.
I won't forget how many times I told you it didn't matter that your hands were always sweaty or how much I appreciate you introducing me to so many different kinds of amazing music. I downloaded some Dio tunes so I can listen to them at the gym, you are so right he is amazing, still. Everytime one of those tunes pops on I think of you and seriously, he went before Ozzy! WTF!! There really is something wrong with the world, but we already knew that. I am so grateful you and Ellie had a chance to meet.
I'm sure I'll be seeing you....Love, Matt

Stephanie was very quick to befriend me when I was the new kid in eighth grade at South Orange Middle School. I remember how delighted we both were to find that we were born the same month, day, and year. She had a wonderfully kind and generous spirit, and a great sense of humor. We fell out of touch in the '90s, but a couple of years ago she contacted me when she heard that I was being treated for thyroid cancer (am OK now). She was as encouraging as ever, only more so in that she was giving me hope in the midst of her own trials. I am so thankful to have known her. All her family are in my prayers.

Over the years, Stephanie's gracious manner of problem-solving laid to rest a multitude of my worries about day-to-day strategies regarding books, visits, travels, and miscellaneous arrangements. I have email messages from her in my files that say: "Never hesitate to ask me these questions," "I've sent along instructions to the...." "Would it be easier to do it the other way?" "You could choose to... Or you might want to... Just let me know which is the easiest for you...." Her replies to my sometimes ridiculous questions were never choppy or impatient, but always kindly and often therapeutic. I'm one of hundreds of people who are going to miss her: Her eagerness to do things well, her sociable way of working, her zest. I remember her wedding plan-making, and I was able to meet her mother in that phase of her life, and I share the something like contentment that we all feel, knowing that she and her husband were so happy. My condolences to her family in this grieving time.

Stephanie, I have thought of you fondly and often since we worked together years ago. My memories are of a strong, courageous. kind soul and that will never change.
I can hear your voice answering the phone, "This is Stephanie Nooney, Can I help you please?" Just the way you answered your phone showed how giving and generous you were, always eager to help. I also admired your jewelry-making talents. Rest in peace Stephanie.

More than 16 years ago Stephanie began working for me at Scholastic as Marketing Assistant, and was then promoted to Coordinator of Author Visits, and later to Manager of Author Visits. Over the years she helped the careers of many of our authors by arranging visits to schools and libraries and speaking engagements at conferences, and also helped the organizers of these events locate a suitable author for their program and assist with all the arrangements. She created an "Author Visit Kit" which is now online, and assisted with the promotion of our authors through printed and online information. All of this, however, hardly begins to describe her contribution. What was remarkable was her unending kindness, helpfulness, humor, and dedication to her work. Stephanie did not have a mean bone in her body. Over the years she became more than a work contact - she became personal friends with dozens - hundreds - of our authors and our customers all over the country, and they loved her. She took her work seriously but also was funny and laughed a lot. She battled her cancer with great courage, always hoping for improvement, and always struggling to keep on with her work, keep helping "her" authors to whom she was so dedicated. She was a great spirit, we are so saddened by her loss, even though glad she passed away peacefully in her own home. We miss her very much and our hearts go out to all her family. Stephanie, we love you and we miss you, may you rest in peace. John Mason, Director of Library and Educational Marketing, Trade Books, Scholastic Inc.

I am so sorry to hear of Stephanie's passing. She was a delightful person to work with, a problem solver, smart and funny, and just great to know. When i spoke to her last, a while ago, I knew she was fighting, and that she was very brave. To her loved ones, who lost someone so young, and so good, I can only send my deep felt sympathy.

I am so devastated by this news...I count myself lucky to have known Stephanie from the time she began working at Scholastic--I was her counterpart at Random House-- handling their author visits --and Stephanie and I often shared authors and stories and many laughs over the years. When she was first diagnosed with thyroid cancer, I can remember going online to research it and feeling very optimistic that everything would be ok. So was Stephanie. At that time she graciously asked if I would step in (as if anyone could) her shoes and handle things during her surgery and treatment. From 2003 on I did just that--whenever she needed me. I have never known anyone who was as brave or kind or selfless as Stephanie. She was the best at what she did--librarians, teachers and authors from around the country will attest to that fact. The last time I filled in for her, I told her I was expecting. The baby was due right around her birthday and we shared the hope he'd be born on the 3rd. He's four months old now, and I just checked in last week to see how she was doing. John's email stunned me. I never thought we would lose Stephanie. She cannot be replaced. I am going to miss her terribly.Lisa
