Obituary of Elizabeth E. Robins

Elizabeth E.  Robins (nee Learn), 93 of Maplewood, formerly of Montclair, passed away at home on November 19, 2018.  Elizabeth was born and raised in Fort Worth, TX. She received her bachelor’s degree in French from the University of Nebraska. After graduating she joined the US State Department. Elizabeth met her husband, George H. P. Robins (Robbie), in the Belgian Congo in 1949 where she was employed by the American Consulate as a coder and decoder of messages after the war, and George was an Assistant Produce Manager for the Belgian Congo. They were married a few years later in Antwerp, Belgium, and moved to the States in 1954, settling in Montclair in 1956. Liz was a Real Estate Agent with Weiss, Corbin & Jones in Montclair for many years. Liz and Robbie retired to Beaufort, South Carolina in 1986.  Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband in Beaufort in 1999 and moved to Winchester Gardens in Maplewood, NJ, to be near her children a few years later.

Liz was a lifelong voracious reader, a longtime member of the American Association of University Women, active in Democratic politics, and an independent spirit. She was a loving, supportive, and generous friend, mother, grandmother and aunt. She is survived by her children Timothy Robins and Sarah Robins Thompson, and grandchildren Ryan Robins Hanson, Christina Robins, Rebekah Thompson, Christopher Robins, and Hannah Thompson, as well as her nephew Christopher Learn of North Carolina, and nieces Patricia and Ann Robins of Brussels, Belgium. A family memorial service in her honor will be held at a later date. Private Arrangements by Preston Funeral Home, South Orange.
