Obituary of Elvie C. Howell
Mrs. Elvie Collins Howell, daughter of the late Sid and Angeline Moore Collins, was born October 11, 1929 in Brookhaven, Lincoln County, MS. She received her early childhood education in the Lincoln County School System attending Progress School. She confessed hope in Christ at an early age and united with New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. Her family loved to sing and she, her mother, father, sisters and brothers would be found singing at the church on Friday evenings. Her parents later moved to the Loyd Star Community and she then united with Damascus Missionary Baptist Church where her grandfather was a Deacon and her grandmother was a Mother of the church. After having her son, Jerry, Elvie relocated to New York. She united in holy matrimony to Eddie Howell and became stepmother to Edwina Howell. To this union was born one daughter, Rosa, who continues her mother’s legacy. Elvie was employed as a factory seamstress in NYC and in later years became a nurse’s aide which was her life's dream. After her retirement she volunteered at South Mountain Rehabilitation & Healthcare. She was preceded in death by: her parents, husband Eddie Howell, son Sgt. Jerry Collins (US Army Retired). Brothers: Jacob Collins, John Henry Collins, J. W. Collins, and Frank Mathis. Sisters: Monteal James Johnson, Florence Collins Sanders, and Dora Mae Collins Cutler. She departed this life on September 20, 2019 at home in the loving and devoted care of her daughter. She leaves to cherish her memory: daughter Rosa Howell Thornhill, stepdaughter Edwina Howell, grandson Terrence Thornhill, brother Elzie Collins, and sisters Mary Collins Benard, Sadie Mae Collins Henderson Williams (all from Brookhaven, MS), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
