Obituary of Roy Serruto
Roy Serruto, 94, of Short Hills passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at home on November 7, 2019. Born in Newark, he lived in Short Hills for more than 60 years. Roy attended Stevens Institute of Technology, completing a multidisciplinary engineering degree. Staying true to his work ethic, he managed to graduate a 5-year program in only 4 years. Roy was the President of Serruto Properties, a 3-generation property management and real estate development company in Chatham, NJ.
A true product of the greatest generation, Roy was a man of integrity as well as a quiet force that influenced countless lives. While raising 7 children, he was an active volunteer in the Millburn Township community, coaching and influencing several generations of children and young adults. He served as President of the Kiwanis Club of Millburn-Springfield, 5th Quarter Club of the Millburn High School Football Team and the Youth Employment Services of Millburn High School. This past June, Roy and his wife, Doris were recipients of the Millburn Township Citizenship Award. Over the years, he was an active member of Stevens Institute’s alumni and member of the Rock Spring and Montclair Golf Clubs. Roy was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church in Short Hills, as well as a regular attendee at the St. Barnabas Medical Center Chapel in Livingston.
Roy never missed his children’s or grandchildren’s sporting events – a mainstay not only for them, but for their teammates as well. He always emphasized education, work ethic and strong values! His greatest joy, however, was sharing his family’s experiences with his wife, Doris of almost 70 years.
Roy was predeceased by his two sons, Paul and Roy Serruto and his sister, Antoinette Schmidt. He is survived by his wife, Doris Ciccone Serruto, 5 children–John Serruto, Mark (Ellen) Serruto, Rose (Geoffrey) Twombly, Roger (Eva) Serruto and Doris Thomas, as well as 18 grandchildren and 1 great grandson. The funeral was private. A memorial mass will be held at St. Rose of Lima Church, 50 Short Hills Ave, Short Hills on Saturday, November 30, 2019. Mass will commence at 11:15 am; family will receive guests beginning at 10:30 am. Donations in the name of Roy Serruto can be sent to the Dominican Nuns, 543 Springfield Ave., Summit NJ 07901.
