I am sad to hear of achyut’s passing. I worked a few sessions of physical therapy with him and though he was weak, I could feel his spirit emanate and I knew I was working with a special soul. May he Rest In Peace. My condolences to his beautiful family whom I have seen surround him with so much love.

We were so sorry to hear of Achyut Uncle's passing recently. He was part of the generation that came to the United States in the 1970s to make better lives for themselves and their families. We all had the fortune of getting to know each other in this process in East Orange- the apartments above and right along the Garden State Parkway. In doing so, our parents became each other's siblings, cousins, and families. And we, the next generation, started our lives together, spending countless happy hours playing and forming bonds that would create strong roots and wonderful memories.
We will forever be indebted to the values they instilled in us- humility, hard work, a love for education, a respect for the cultures that brought us forth, the importance of family, and the priceless significance of the community they built. Though time has sent us on different paths across the globe, the warm smiles seen at our periodic reunions remind us of the strong ties we have to each other.
We will miss his smile and warmth, but are reassured that he is at peace. Our condolences to Kiwa Aunty, Bhalendu, Komal, Chitra, & families.

Our family has always been so blessed to have Achyut a part of our lives! We were all touched with his gentle nature, his warm and welcoming personality, his deep love and dedication to his family, and his generosity, kindness, and radiating smile that would warm our hearts! We will always treasure so many special times we shared together with Achyut through the years!
When Achyut and Kiwa met Gary's family in Pittsburgh for the first time there was no electricity, so we greeted each other in their car in our garage in the dark. However, their happy faces and glowing personality brightened these circumstances and made our Dietz family so thankful that Kiwa and Achyut were now truly "family" with the future marriage of Komal and Gary!
Another special memory with Achyut was how important it was for him that our family all be involved in the Indian Wedding Ceremony for Komal and Gary. He wanted to share his Hindu faith with us and help us understand the meaning of each part of the ceremony. Achyut and his family demonstrated to us especially that day how their religion is woven into the fiber of who they are and the way they live their life.
My daughter Colleen did a school project on Interviewing someone who immigrated to the United States and she selected Achyut and Kiwa! What Colleen shared with our family about their long and challenging journey to the United States to find work, place to live, and get settled in a new country with language barriers was admirable and inspirational! Nothing would stop Achyut to follow his dreams and Kiwa supported him in every way possible.
Looking back in time, we were impressed how Achyut worked tirelessly throughout his educational and professional achievements in his career. He demonstrated throughout his life so many admirable character traits and lived his life to the fullest as a loving husband, a caring and encouraging dad, a fun and creative Baba, and a kind friend to all.
Achyut will be in our hearts forever!
May Achyut have peace on his journey!
Sending love and prayers of comfort, strength, and peace
for Kiwa, Chitra, Bhalendu, Komal, and families!

From - Achyut's youngest sis Veena
All sweet memories of my childhood! There are so many. But when I read Chitra's sms -- this memory stood in front of my eyes as a picture with all minute details, When he got his Ph,D, we met on Laxmi road at a point next 10 feet from my school, he gave me the news with a joyous mood; probably I was the first one to share it, With so much happiness , I congratulated him, shook hands in high spirits. And then...I remembered my father's words, how he fought with the circumstances and got his degree, And then step by step, he went on climbing towards the success. His career in NCL , designing the syllabus in polymer chemistry for Pune university, then flying to Japan, there got married to Japanese girl....Kiwa ( because of this, he was known as Japanese Deshpande in NCL-- this I came to know after so many years. ) who came to India.. lived in old house of 2 rooms, got adjusted with Indian food , dress , culture., so many rituals and what not ! Achyut was proud of Kiwa and we - of his choice ! Her main participation in Kailas's marriage... Following all rituals and customs, mixing with our crowd,,, I.e, understanding and cutting jokes in Marathi. No doubt it was Kiwa's intelligence and patience , but the main thing is - Achyut was the man behind this !
He was 16 years older than me. We used to visit their house at least once a week. Of course, it was due to lovely Relationship between brother- sister ( my father and atya ) and Mama's love , At the time of Vilas's birth my mother was in the hospital and we both the sisters were in Atya's house, At that time I was just 5 years old and the smallest sister of Achyut. First he warned me, not to call him with any suffix as dada, anna, bhau or anything else as elder brother but call Achyut only. That was his simplicity. At that time There was festival-mendi program and how he used to tease me every now and then , waiting for my crying, which I never used to ! And so the teasing used to continue in different forms, I still remember it. Lots of Memories are there, how much I will write?

Many people knew my father as Baba, but to my girls he was called Ajoba, grandfather in Marathi. My girls were very proud of their Ajoba. They wanted to spend every holiday and summer vacation visiting NJ so they could spend time with their Aji and Ajoba. Much of the time we spent with Ajoba was around the dining room table. Ajoba liked to sit in the dining room. He liked to talk, discuss and enjoy eating good food together. Ajoba will be in our hearts forever. ❤️

Dear Kiwa, Komal, Bhalendu,Chitra and family,
My heart is still breaking to have lost such a warm, kind and respected man in my life. He was the center of the Deshpande family and his presence was felt in a positive and influential way.
Our family first met Achyut and Kiwa when they came to visit my family in Pittsburgh ( Gary and Komal might have been engaged). From the moment we met them, The Deshpande family became part of our family too. It was a wonderful weekend and I saw first hand all the wonderful attributes Komal had were a directly influenced by her upbringing of her parents. We had many laughs that weekend.
The picture is from Stacy's First Communion party. Achyut and Kiwa had joined our small gathering. Stacy was preparing for an International
Day celebration at school and chose to represent Japan partly because her Uncle Gary had studied abroad there and Stacy had also learned Japanese at an afterschool language club. Kiwa was so kind to bring kimonos for Stacy to use and as you can see from the photo we all enjoyed wearing them. It meant alot to me that Achyut and Kiwa made the long trip to be part of our celebration.
At Gary and Komal's Hindu ceremony, I got to hear first hand all the beliefs that are instilled in each new marriage and their dedication to continue those vows for their future children. Achyut was so very proud that day-he was beaming! He had a smile that stretched across his face- one that his children and grandchildren also have. It was an honor to be present at the ceremony and exciting to try so many new foods. One of my favorite momories of Achyut was when he strongly kept encouraging Bob, my boyfriend at the time, "when are you going to do this too????" He wanted us to share the same happiness in marriage as he and Kiwa had.Fortunately we did the next year.
My last few visits with Achyut were through FaceTimes when Komal and family were visiting over Christmas. I could see the love and strong bond that they all had for each other. Even living in two different places, they still kept in touch daily.
Thank you Achyut for your kindness, encouraging words and smile that made and will always hold a special place in my heart!
I love you and will miss you! Mary Ann

We met Achyut rao and Kiwa tai in 1977. We were new to this country. They, during our initial years, went out of their way to help us. From helping us to integrate, to taking care of our daughter like their own, while we worked. We will never forget their benevolence. He was an amazing individual and they were an exceptional couple. He will be missed greatly.

Dear Baba,
I wanted to share this photo of you as you were about to leave India back in 1973. You were 40 years old with a good job with the National Chemical Laboratories and two small children. Yet, you had a big dream and you followed that dream to the USA. You left without knowing when or if you would ever return. Surrounded by your loved ones - your mother, brother, uncles, cousins, in-laws - you took that big voyage, hoping for a better life for you family.
You landed in East Orange, NJ where I was born and we met many friends who became our new family. You and mom worked hard and saved your money so we could buy our wonderful home in South Orange, where again we made many dear friends and neighbors who have become a part of our family. Thank you for your sacrifices, hard work and love. You and mom have been the pillars of our lives and now the lives of our children. I hope that we can sustain all that you built.
I would also like to recreate your send-off from India to America now through thoughts and prayers. Please know and feel that all your family and friends all over the worldwide are surrounding you with love and best wishes for your next big journey. This time you will need to take the journey alone, but we look forward to seeing you when it is our turn. In the meantime, your spirit will always be with us. We know that you will continue to guide us. I miss you and I love you! Chitra

Baba was a great man and we were honored to be a part of his life. We were more than just a neighbor; he adopted us as part of his family and for that we’re forever grateful.
Our condolences to Kiwa and to the entire Deshpande family. I know the loss is immeasurable but so is the love and memories. Om Shanti.

Dear Mothe Mama,
I can not believe, and am still unable to digest the fact that you have left us all on 10th April, 2020.
Since then, a lot of memories of the time I spent with you are running through my mind. One of the earliest memories I remember was when I was unable to write the Gujarati letter "ખ" , and you taught me how to write it. Kanchan and I were fortunate to have spent a very enjoyable and memorable time with you when we visited you last September. We could not have imagined that you would go so far away so soon.
Since the sad demise of our parents, you were the great moral strength for us, and we will continue to cherish the fond memories of you.
