Obituary of Marie Germanie Paul

Please share a memory of Marie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Marie Germanie (Manmam, Grandma, Tatti, Nini, Silnata) Paul, passed away unexpectedly at Overlook Hospital at the age of 76 years. Born and raised in Jeremie, Haiti, she submitted to the lure of the big city, Port-au-Prince, joining her extended family and later in life emigrated to the U.S. in 2001.

Germanie was a strong, determined, and fiercely independent woman who never shied away from a challenge, whether it was physical work or the endless debates on Haitian politics. We will miss her passionate opinions – for she was a woman of strong conviction in her beliefs. Everyone who knew her recognize the famous “deux je’m frette” words followed by her declaration or threat. There was never a job too large or too small that she would not take on. She enjoyed spending time with her precious families (for she was blessed with several), and many great friends, taking great pleasure in singing, dancing, gardening and playing the numbers. She made a point of reminding us every chance that children are blessings from God and was extremely overjoyed to have witnessed and enjoyed the budding life of the great grandsons she had - thus far.

She led by example. As fierce as she can be (some know it as bossy), she was the walking example of kindness, empathy, steadfast loyalty and strongly believed in service to others.

Germanie was predeceased by her daughter, Mon Etoile (My Star) Paul, and her sister Ibosette Paul. She leaves behind her children, daughter Marie Edwidge Doblas and son, Jean Doblas, she was the dear sister of Marie Sylvenie Paul and cherished grandmother of Joshua Mentor, Santia Victor and James Mentor. She is also survived by a whole host of nephews and nieces, including her beloved nephew, Neville Pierre Louis whom she calls simply “Cousin Pierro”. She leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss her and all of whom she loved and touched deeply.

The family of Marie Germanie Paul thank you so very much for the cards, flowers, and the outpouring of expressions of sympathy and support you have shown us following her unexpected and devastating passing.

Your support at this difficult time is deeply appreciated and is of great comfort to our family.

Special thank you to her adoptive family, the Zephirins, the Desbas, the Saint Jeans, the Bonhommes and the Mentors for wholeheartedly enfolding our Nini in your bosoms – a place of great comfort to her.  We will never be able to express how deeply grateful we are.

Mille mѐrcis a tous due fond dur coeur pour la bonte, votre amour et vos prières, ainsi que pour votre soutien que vous nous avez donnés.
