I was fortunate to have Frau Wels as my German teacher for five years and she was always my favorite teacher. She made class such a delight and was constantly spoiling us with her German Bonbons. She will be greatly missed, but her memory will live on whenever I crack open a Kinder Überraschung. I am so sorry for your loss.

I am having trouble with this from China and hoping my fourth attempt works. Christina I send heartfelt condolences to you and yours. I loved your mom, who was one of my favorite colleagues ever. She had a wonderful ironic sense of humor but she was also always warm and caring. My favorite story of hers was when she reported, rather nonplussed, that a little grade 8 Korean boy in ESL, who obviously had a crush on her, told her “ madam, you must have been very beautiful in your day” she reported the story in a whisper and then began laughing so hard I had to pat her on the back to help her recover. Renata was such an intelligent, urbane, dignified, and warm person. Rest well, dear Renata, and see you again in the ethereal faculty meeting where there are no announcements, just wine and snacks and good conversation.

Renate was a Wunder! She regaled all with her adventures, enlightened us with her sophisticated world view, and had a wicked sense of humor that made her a joy to be with. A wonderful colleague, she will be missed by all.

Renate’s sense of humor was legendary. When I started working at NA, she volunteered to be my mentor. I will never forget Renate’s humor and advice: “Don’t let your skirt drop in middle of class and all will be well.” Rest in peace dear Renate.

Renate was a dedicated educator who loved her students and was loved by them. She might also have had the best sense of humor of any German speaker in history. Her Halloween costumes were legendary. She will be missed.

Frau Wels holds a very special place in my life and in my heart. As a student of hers for four years at NA, she was patient, kind and an understanding friend and teacher to me. I was far from a model student, and had a difficult time finding my place at NA at times. I think she took sympathy on that, and was always there to lend encouragement and give me a kick in the rear when I needed it. My sarcasm and sharp sense of humor was only matched by that of Frau Wels -- and boy could she offer up some zingers! I thoroughly enjoyed learning German under her tutelage, and it became one of the classes I actually looked forward to attending in high school. At the end of four years, Frau Wels wrote the recommendation letter for my college applications. I will forever be indebted to her for that, as it set me off on a new journey I might not have embarked upon had it not been for her help. I only regret that I did not stay in touch with her over the years. To her family I offer my sincere condolences and heartfelt prayers. And to Frau Wels; Danke schön. Ich werde dich nie vergessen.

Kristina, that just fills my heart with such joy. I always wondered what my teachers thought of me, for better or for worse hahah! Your mom was just such a wonderful person and fantastic teacher, and my own parents loved her for being both tough and caring to me, just as they were. It must've been a German/Austrian thing. I remember you as well and hope you are finding strength during these difficult times. May warm memories of your mom and her eternal love carry you through. - Franz

Renate’s empathy, intelligence, and wicked sense of humor made her a wonderful friend and colleague. She was a devoted educator who truly loved her students. Being the only German teacher, my two boys were lucky enough to be in her classes for a total of nine years! My husband still went to her class every “back to school night” because he just loved to chat and catch up with her. Whenever we are in Europe, we still all hunt for the Kinder Eggs she use to hand out as prizes in class. I do miss all of those lunches and faculty teas I spent enjoying Renate’s company. And the time she played her accordion - what fun! God’s blessings to the Empress of the Study Hall.

I will always hold a special fondness for my four years as a student in Renate’s German class and my time spent on staff with her at NA. Rare is the teacher who can stand in front of a room of students that spanned grades 7-11 and find a way to reach and to teach them. She was patient and kind and funny as hell. While some of my German language skills may have faded with time, my memories of the joy in that class and of my time spent with “Frau Wels” are indelible. I’m terribly sorry for your loss.
