Obituary of Chief W. Paul Tighe
William Paul Tighe, 93, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2023 at Morristown Medical Center. He was born on March 25, 1929 in Milburn, New Jersey to William P Tighe and Elizabeth Tighe and was one of 10 siblings.
Paul lived a full and meaningful life, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him. He was known for his kind and generous nature, his sharp wit, and his intelligence. He had a deep love for his family and friends, and will be greatly missed.
Paul will be remembered professionally as a dedicated public servant. After serving four years in the Navy aboard the USS Cabot CVL AirCraft Carrier, he joined the Milburn Police Department as a patrolman, following in the footsteps of his grandfather and uncle. His commitment to the safety and well-being of Milburn's citizens, combined with his extensive training and expertise, earned him the position of Milburn Police Department's Chief in 1969, which he served with distinction for 24 years. Paul continued to serve the community even after his retirement as chief as an active member of the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police and worked closely with the state of New Jersey to pass legislation that focused on reducing crime.
Paul was also a talented artist, with a unique style and visually appealing compositions. His work is currently being displayed at the Millburn Public Library, and dozens of his paintings can be found in the homes and offices of family and friends. Paul was an accomplished runner having competed in the New York Marathon multiple times, a skilled marksman, and a stellar football player for Milburn High School. Paul was also an active member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church where he served as the Business Manager and Trustee for many years, building on the Tighe family’s generational connection to St. Rose. Paul’s passions included gardening, photography, reading and dancing with his wife, Nancy.
Above all, Paul cherished spending time with his loved ones. Paul was always involved in his kid’s activities. Whether he was a coach, a supporter or a fan, Paul was always present. He was happiest when surrounded by his family, holding his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and attending their games, recitals, graduations, birthdays, and other events. He was often behind the lens of his camera at these events to capture life's most precious moments.
Paul is survived by his wife Nancy Moccia Tighe of 65 years; four children, Debora Beyer (James), Mary Beth LaVecchia (Joe), William Paul Tighe III and Rosellen Donoghue ( Michael), 10 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Timmy and Brian, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Visitation will be held at St. Rose of Lima Church, 50 Short Hills Ave. Short Hills on Sunday, March19th from 2-6 PM . The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Rose of Lima Church, on Monday, March 20th at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery.
