Obituary of Shirley D. Aymer

Shirley Delores Aymer

Mrs. Shirley Delores Aymer, née Lewin, of South Orange, New Jersey passed away on March 31, 2023 after a sudden illness. A memorial service in celebration of her life and bearing witness to our hope of the resurrection will be held at 11 am on April 29, 2023, at South Orange-Vailsburg United Methodist Church, 150 S Orange Ave, South Orange.

Shirley was born in the parish of Clarendon on the island of Jamaica in the Caribbean, on December 6, 1939, to Charles Lewin and Mabel Williams. She was a graduate of Clarendon College and the University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica where she received a BSc. in Chemistry and Zoology, and a Dipl. Ed. Later, she received her MA in Environmental Science from Montclair State University in Montclair, NJ.

Her life was devoted to education, teaching in the Caribbean and the United States, ending with 25 years teaching at Clifford Scott/East Orange Campus 9. She was a faithful member of the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA), and upon retirement, she joined the Essex County Retirees Education Association (ECREA). In retirement, she volunteered as a math tutor and as a volunteer for Literacy Volunteers of America. She was also a devoted and active member of South Orange-Vailsburg and Calvary-Roseville United Methodist churches.

Shirley was considered one of the most kind, generous, and supportive persons that any of her friends or family knew, a person willing to care for people regardless of station in life, and deeply loving of all. She was also a wonderful hugger, an expert listener, and an amazing cook and baker.

Shirley Delores Aymer is survived by her three daughters: Margaret Aymer Oget, Valerie Aymer, Ann-Marie Aymer, their spouses Laurent Oget, and Kristen Claire Foley; and by her grandson, Gabriel Oget.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the ECREA. Send checks to Perry Jackson, c/o Essex County Education Assoc., 886 Pompton Avenue, Unit B-2, Cedar Grove, New Jersey 07009. Please make checks payable to "ECREA."
