Obituary of John F. McTernan

John F. McTernan, age 65, of Morris Plains died suddenly on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at Morristown Medical Center.

Mr. McTernan was born in Newark on December 15, 1958 to John F. And Margaret McTernan. He was raised in Maplewood, graduating from Our Lady of the Valley High School in 1977. John lived in Union before moving to Morris Plains 5 years ago. Mr. McTernan was a shipping and receiving manager at Schering-Plough and Merck for 25 years. Most recently, he was employed by N.J.I.T. in Newark and was the Mail Room Manager.   

John was a devoted father who encouraged and supported his children to chase their dreams. One of his favorite activities was teaching and supporting his children in various sports and activities, namely baseball and softball. It was a rarity to not see him on the sidelines cheering them on. Mr. McTernan also was an avid basketball player himself and enjoyed playing pick-up games in his free time.  

Mr. McTernan was the devoted father of Peter J., John F. Jr., Kaitlyn, and Erin. John was the beloved sibling of Maureen and her husband Donald and Kevin and his wife Nancy. John was predeceased by his brother Robert McTernan who is survived by wife Jo Ann McTernan. Mr. McTernan is also survived by niece and nephews: Lauren Michels, Douglas Kaplan, Brian McTernan, Matthew McTernan, and Ryan McTernan.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Monday, February 12^th from 4-8 PM at The Jacob A. Holle Funeral Home, 2122 Millburn Avenue, Maplewood, NJ.  A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, February 13^th at St. Joseph's Church, 767 Prospect St, Maplewood. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.
