Stephen J. Sobocinski, 93, formerly of Maplewood, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 23, 2012 in Lakewood, NJ. Stephen was born in Newark in 1918 to John J. and Stella Jonkoski Sobocinski. He attended various Catholic grade schools and graduated from Union High School. He moved to Maplewood in 1940 and lived there until 1998 when he moved to Ocean County. After high school, he worked for several employers including Todd Shipyards, Hoboken, NJ. He served with pride during World War II in the U.S. Navy Construction Batallions (Seabees) and was stationed in Alaska's Aleutian Islands, the Philippines, and other South Pacific locations. Stephen was pre-deceased by his parents, his sister Adele Tracy and brother Robert. He is survived by his sister Dorothy Marolt of Chatham and brother Vincent John (Carolyn) of Toms River. Steve was a wonderful and humble person, enjoyable to be around and beloved by his nieces and nephews and their many children. He loved sports - particularly the Yankees, the Jersey shore, seafood and a glass of beer or scotch, playing chess and cards, and going on car trips, often visiting various family members. A viewing will be held from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM on Monday, January 30, 2012 at the Jacob Holle Funeral Home, 2122 Millburn Avenue, Maplewood, NJ. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph's R.C. Church, 767 Prospect Avenue, Maplewood, NJ. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 225 Ridgedale Avenue, East Hanover, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Steve's memory to the charity of your choice.
