James F. Foligno Sr., 89, a lifelong resident of South Orange, N.J. passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2014, in St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston, N.J.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at the Preston Funeral Home, 153 South Orange Ave., South Orange, N.J., on Tuesday, June 17, at 11 a.m. Interment is at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover, N.J. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m.
In 1943, Mr. Foligno left Columbia High School in Maplewood, N.J., to enter the Army for World War II. He was a member of the 114th Infantry Regiment and the 44th Infantry Division of the 7th Army. A member of an anti-tank company, he was involved in campaigns and battles in Northern France, the Rhineland, and Central Europe from September 1944 until July of 1945.
In May of 1954, he became a motorcycle police officer for the Township of South Orange; he worked for the police department for 32 years until his retirement in June 1986.
Mr. Foligno was an active outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a member of the Florham Park Pistol and Gun Club and the Warren County Rod & Gun Club. He was a fan and follower of his beloved San Francisco 49ers and New York Yankees.
Mr. Foligno was the beloved husband of the late Josephine L. Fabrizio Foligno; devoted father of Joseph and his wife, Geraldine, of Union, N.J.; James Jr. and his wife, Ellen, of Belford, N.J., and John Foligno and his wife, Margot, of Lincoln Park, N.J.; dear brother of Thomas Foligno of Brick, N.J., and the late Joseph, Anthony, John, and John A. Foligno, and the loving grandfather of six grandchildren.
