Eugene D. Lanigan, 89, of Maplewood, N.J., passed away on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2014, at Kindred Hospital in Rahway, N.J.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 217 Prospect St., South Orange, N.J., on Friday, Aug 29, at 9:30 a.m. Interment is private. Visitation will be held at The Jacob A. Eugene was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and lived in Schenectady, N.Y., before moving to Maplewood for 38 years ago.
He graduated from Manhattan College with a B.S. in engineering. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946.
Eugene was a sales executive for General Electric in Schenectady from 1946 to 1976. He later worked for Siemens AG in Iselin, N.J., also as a sales executive, from 1976 to 1990.
He was a volunteer with the Jewish Vocational Service Immigrant Resettlement Center, a trustee with the Maplewood Club, and a member of the Winchester Gardens executive search, finance, and marketing committees.
Eugene was an avid fisherman who encouraged both young and old to become interested in the sport. He was a lover of jazz music, a proficient pianist, prolific writer and social commentator, and superb vegetable gardener.
He was the beloved husband of the late Rita Burke Lanigan, and devoted father of Daniel R. Lanigan, Joan L. Strauss, and the late Janet M. Lanigan.
