Richard D. Howland Ph.D., 73 of South Orange died Friday, April 8, 2016 in St. Barnabas Hospital, Livingston.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Service at Morrow Memorial Methodist Church, 600 Ridgewood Road, Maplewood on Friday, April 15th at 2:00 PM. Interment will be private. Born in Queens, NY, Dr. Howland lived in South Orange for over 40 years. He was a Professor of Pharmacology at University of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark. Dr. Howland was a loved and respected member of the faculty, and a wonderful teacher. He dedicated most of his career to educating future doctors, dental professionals and graduate students working in the biomedical sciences, and led the medical school pharmacology course for 30 years. Through these activities alone, he has touched the lives of thousands of students, and hence millions of people. He carried out research that was funded by the National Institutes of Health to investigate the toxicology of widely used chemicals that affect the peripheral nervous system. He earned a B.S at Drew University and a Ph.D. in Pharmacolgy at Univ of California San Francisco. Richard was a dedicated kayaker and amateur photographer, who traveled the country to explore both passions.
He was the beloved husband of late Merry Bowers Howland; devoted father of David and his companion Tara; Keir Livingston and her wife Erin; Christopher; Matthew and his wife Sarah; Adam; Ian and Mark Howland, loving grandfather of Steven, Conor and Thaddeus. Richard was a 25 year friend of Bill W.
