Mrs. Martha C. McCaskie of Basking Ridge passed away on April 5, 2008. The funeral will be private. Arrangements are by The Jacob A. Holle Funeral Home, Maplewood. A memorial guest book is available online at jacobhollefuneralhome.com.
Martha was born and raised in New York City and graduated from Swarthmore College. She lived in Maplewood for most of her married life and then lived in Basking Ridge for the past 12 years. She worked as a librarian at the Maplewood, Springfield, and Bernard Township libraries. A volunteer in many capacities within whatever community she lived, Martha received recognition as Somerset Hills YMCA Volunteer of the Year in 2005. As an active Braille transcriber for almost 50 years, she reproduced hundreds of textbooks for New Jerseys visually-impaired children and for many years was the chair of the Braille Department of the Essex County Red Cross. She was a member of St. Georges Altar Guild for 45 years, co-chair and founder of Fellowship Village Library and secretary of their Resident Board. An active gardener, bridge player and golfer, she was also, until recently, an excellent tennis player. A woman of intelligence, fierce independence, determination, and high standards, Martha will be remembered as a wonderful mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother, a mentor, and a cherished friend to so many.
Predeceased by her husband, Prestley, she leaves behind two daughters, Susan Humphrey, and Joan Drum and her husband, Brian; two grandchildren, Adam Drum and his wife, Jean, and Carly Drum ONeill and her husband, Michael, and three great-grandchildren, Ryan, Kayla, and Gavin Drum.
Contributions in her memory to a favorite charity would be appreciated.
