Obituary of James Flanagan
James F. Flanagan III Esq., of South Orange formerly of Maplewood for 38 years and Newark for 30 years passed away on Sunday November 25,2018 at St. Barnabas Hospital.A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church (Newark Abbey Church), 528 Martin Luther King Blvd., Newark on Fri., November 30th at 10:00 AM. Visitation will be at The Jacob Holle Funeral Home, 2122 Millburn Ave., Maplewood on Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9PM. Interment will be private. Mr. Flanagan was born in Norristown, PA. James graduated from St. Benedicts Prep, Fairfield University and Seton Hall Law Center. James worked as a prosecutor in various capacities including Assistant Essex County Prosecutor, Deputy Attorney General-Criminal Justice and Assistant US Attorney. He was also Deputy Director of the NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement. He was also a partner in Tomkins, McGuire & Wachenfeld, and was appointed by US District Judge Brown as Monitor for Local 54, the Atlantic City Hotels Workers Union. He was a member of Essex County Country Club since 1970 servering two terms as President. He was on the Boy Scouts Advisory Board-Robert Treat Council, Mock Trial Coach at Seton Hall Prep, Board of Advisors at Seton Hall Law School, Parish Council at Our Lady of Good Counsel and Immaculate Heart of Mary. James was an avid golfer and a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan. He visited every major league baseball park and over 150 minor league teams and enjoyed Devils, Seton Hall and Jets season tickets. He was predeceased by his parents Victoria(nee Fromm) and James Flanagan MD, who later retired and became Fr. Paul Flanagan, OSB. He is survived by his brother Paul Flanagan and his wife Tricia. Beloved Uncle of William (Caroline), Matthew and Maura Flanagan and great uncle of Matthew and Joseph Flanagan. In lieu of flowers donations to St. Benedict’s Prepatory School, 520 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Newark, NJ 07102 would be appreciated.
