Obituary of Carl G. Quillen M.D.

Dr. Carl Gray Quillen of Maplewood, NJ passed away peacefully at his residence on Monday, January 28th, 2019. He was 76.

A visitation will be held at St. George's Episcopal Church, 550 Ridgewood Rd, Maplewood, NJ 07040 on Saturday, February 2nd, from 12:00-2:00 pm, followed by a funeral service at 2:00pm.

Dr. Carl Gray Quillen was born, October 9th, 1942, in Orange, NJ to the late Charles and Emma (Gray) Quillen. Carl was a longtime Maplewood resident and maintained a private medical practice of 38 years as a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, specializing in Microvascular Hand Surgery.He graduated from Newark Academy in 1960 and received his Bachelor’s Degree from Lafayette College in 1964. Carl earned his MD from the University of Maryland, School of Medicine in 1968. Following his first year of medical residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami Florida, he served in the US Navy as Medical Officer, Lieutenant on the USS Guam. Upon completion of his naval service, Dr. Carl G. Quillen continued his medical residency at the University of Louisville, Louisville, KY and Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC.

Carl was Chairman of Plastic Surgery at both Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and the University of Medicine & Dentistry, Newark, NJ. He was also an Attending at Summit Overlook Medical Center, Summit, NJ. Dr. Carl Quillen was known to his colleagues, residents, nurses and patients as a compassionate, caring surgeon.

He was the beloved husband of 50 years to the late Patricia (Beatty) Quillen; devoted father of Carl G. Quillen Jr. and Emily Quillen White and her husband,Jamie; loving grandfather of William, Abigale and Thomas Quillen, and caring brother to the late Daniel G. Quillen.

Flowers can be sent on Friday, February 1st, between the hours of 12:00-3:00 pm to St. George's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Frederick B. Cohen Comprehensive Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center,201 Lyons Ave., Newark, NJ 07112 would be appreciated.
