My radio car partner (Tony Infante) and I worked for the Chief when he was captain of the West District. We later worked for him when he was the C.O. of the Tac Force as an inspector.
The Chief was not only our boss, he was our mentor and advisor. This remained true after the 2nd round of Newark layoffs when Tony and I went to the Port Authority Police Dept. The Chief continued to provide advice and counsel and was a true source of support for us as we were promoted in that agency. The Chief played an important role in our careers and is part of our professional history. He will always be remembered.

I had the privilege of meeting Tom through a mutual friend, Jack Rodriquez over twenty years ago. He greeted me the first time and every time just as he did with everyone else; as a best friend he hadn't seen in years. It's just the way he made everyone feel special. The Chief was always the center of attention in any setting, not because he ever asked for it. It was simply his personality and we all wanted to be a small part of it all. Tom was always interested in the lives of others and made a point of asking and listening about yours. Chief O'Reilly never boasted or bragged about the accomplishments in his life and chose instead, to share so many wonderful stories about others. His stories were captivating, funny and always with smile and that glint in his eye as he told them. He infused each story or memory of someone with his typical Irish wit, and never at the expense of someone else. I appreciated the decency and compassion he extending to the wayward and abandoned creatures in his neighborhood, ensuring they were well fed and had shelter from the elements. It was yet another part of who he was.his compassion and quiet caring that I greatly admired. I was deeply saddened to learn of Chief O'Reilly's passing, but I am grateful that I knew him. Rest easy Chief, until we meet again.

Tom was my Sergeant in the police academy in 1967. We remained friends ever since. I was proud to serve under him when he became Chief of Police. Tom was a GREAT humble man who loved and respected his men. He was always fair and compassionate. Tom loved his men and loved me.
I'm sorry I can't join you but I am presently in Hackensack Hospital Cancer Unit awaiting a bone marrow transplant. I am a firm believer in prayer and will be in constant prayer for you family.
Tom will be missed. He was an extrodinary man and friend.

RIP Chief O'Reilly...Will miss seeing you now & then at the Irish/Emerald Society events! :(
In 1993, Chief O'Reilly was gracious enough to help out this lowly Patrolman (lol)...with my Master's Thesis. It was on Directed Patrol, and the Chief gave me carte blanche access/information to Newark PD's "Captain's car" Directed Patrol initiatives. Just one of countless stories of the Chief going out of his way for others!

My sincere condolence to his Dear sister Mary Ellen, Joe and family. A great police leader and man. Proud of his Irish heritage and his beloved city where he served for 43 years and continued to reside in. I am happy to say he promoted me to Detective for the last years of my career. May you rest Chief Tommy in your heavenly home in eternal peace with our dear Lord.

Uncle Tommy, the world will never know how much you meant to our family - your kindness, caring, compassion, generosity and humble nature were unmatched. The love you had for your city, your roots and your faith is immeasurable - that love will never be forgotten, nor will your smiling face. I know that you are sitting at the right hand of God, our Father. Balleyjamesduff has lost another gentle soul, one that left an indelible mark on humanity.

My condolences to the Family of Chief Thomas C. O’Reilly. I knew Chief O’Reilly since I came on the job in 1970. He was a Lieutenant at the Academy. Over the years he and I worked together. He was the Inspector at the Detective Division when I was a Detective there. He helped myself and several other guys go to college at Kean College. He helped me become the Sergeant at the SARA Unit and also to become Lieutenant. He was always a Cop’s Cop and a great guy. May he Rest In Peace.
